Who should hire a doula?
Moms not in relationships
Doulas provide the experience and wisdom of a mother, sister or friend without all the potential baggage.
First-time moms
The first time around, labor can be exciting and a little scary. It is wonderful to have the full time support of a woman who's "been there and done that."
Experienced moms
Many second-or-more-time moms benefit from having someone around who can help them to advocate for the type of birth they desire. Many people see things they'd like to change from the first time they experienced birth; a doula can help you get the birth you deserve.
Moms planning adoptions
These special moms deserve to have the support of an objective woman who can help remind the hospital staff of her generous gift.
Moms with husbands or partners present
Doulas don't replace dads in the labor and delivery room. Rather they provide an extra set of hands and provide reassurace and guidance to that partner.
Moms without husbands or partners present
When a woman's partner is unavailable due to military service, work, or for any reason, it is essential that moms are supported throughout the labor and delivery. A doula can also help to document the labor so that the partner can share in the experience later.
